Thanks Rob, remaining me about your previous work with the EM23.
My way of measuring dbA (as good as I can) is to make so many
measurements of a mic that I am certain of a correct "average"
figure. Then I compare it with the 10dbA of a MKH20.
Doing this with EM23, the meter flaps between 13 and 15 db, A-weighted.
It is somewhat more difficult to determine the self noise when using
different kind of PIP recorders, but I have never noticed any
significant audible difference. Because of the middle-to-high output
of the EM23, the Edirol R-09 is the only recorder that seems (?) to
add noise on top of the EM23 self noise.
