I agree that the Edirol R-09HR sounds quieter than the R09, but as
Klas' just mentioned, the R09 is not among the better recorders in
terms of pre noise performance.
The noisy mics that Neal is using do not allow us to discern
performance differences between the Sony D50 and the R-09HR. His
comparisons of the recorder's using their built-in mics are useful
for applications like recording voice.
The "naturalness" of sound quality on close-mic'd voice is very
subjective and much more dependent on the mic, not the recorder.

What lack of sensitivity? What mic/recorder/subject? In principle,
no, one should not require the use an external mic preamp with any of
the recorders you mention. Rob D.
