Of course, the EM-23 is larger than what many people consider to be
"small" as with head-worn binaural applications (as Lily was
requesting, for example).
To the best of my knowledge, the self-noise of the Telinga EM-23 has
never been precisely measured. Gerry and I did a side by side
listening test on the EMKS-23 (Running on Hi-MD/PIP)

3-4 years ago, I compared a first generation Klas/Telinga EM-23 to my
MBHO 200D/603a which specs as 14dB(A) self-noise. Audibly, the noise
level was very, very close. Klas has always accepted 14dB(A) as a
working number. I believe Klas was able to get better performance out
of the EM-23's on PIP than phantom powering if I recall correctly.
Smaller recorder mic preamps (most of which provide PIP) seem to be a
very good performance/economy match for electret mics. Most
recordists looking for "small," "quiet" mics may be expecting them to
run on PIP. Eric's list might be a lot shorter with the phantom
powered units taken out.
Don't a number of the electrets have pretty low sensitivity too?
Perhaps something good to figure in because some of the new pocket
recorders have limited gain. Rob D.
