I might not have been completely clear. I doubt that the hum is from  
the power supply. Although I'm not sure, it could be that my mic  
cables pick it up from the long extension cord. But that would be  
surprising, given that I'm using balanced star quad lines. Perhaps  
something else is picking it up.

I never fully diagnosed the problem. Sometimes changing cables did the  
trick; other times I moved the extension cord to a different outlet.  
When I discovered a change that eliminated the hum, I was ready to  
record. Controlled experiments later failed to reproduce the hum.

I don't use AC often enough to motivate much more experimenting. But  
if someone has a good hypothesis I might be able to check it out.
