Re: High quality Mic preamps

I think the conclusion we've all come to is the the only field ready
'little' boxes that do/did MS decoding are/were the Sound Devices MP2
and the AEA MS38 Lite. To get MS decoding in a new field preamp you
need to get a mixer like the 302 or similar. I expressed concern
about this to the SD rep at AES last month. I mentioned how the MP2
has become such a sought after preamp for the MS decoding. Hopefully
they will reintroduce this into the MixPre at some point.

While I was concerned with this issue greatly when putting my first MS
rig together, I have learned [with the help of those on this forum]
that monitoring the decoded MS singal in the field is not entirely
necessary. You'll be hearing the stereo mix under less than ideal
circumstances and assuming you are recording the channels discretely,
you will adjust the mix later. While it's certainly a plus to have
the decoding in the field, it is entirely possible to make quality MS
recordings without monitoring the mix in the field.

1/4" and RCA jacks are not standard in the film audio world. RCA is
less than desirable since it's an unbalanced consumer format, and
1/4", seen more often [usually more in the music end of things], is a
little more rugged, but XLR and the TA3/4 connectors are more stable
[in general].
