When I use an external preamp, I use my Sound Devices MP-2
(discontinued). I rarely use MS. I prefer spaced omnis with barrier.
The tradeoff is less mono compatible (don't care), more spacious
(iPod listeners are on headphones).

Sound Devices products are designed for audio for film and video.
Those requirements are also a good fit what nature recordists need
(bias alert--I'm a dealer).

The use of the odd connectors is all about space. There just isn't
room for enough XLRs on a miniaturized unit.
