Quite a few people have successfully made their own wind protection
systems. When you think about what really goes into one, it should be
fairly easy to make, assuming you're willing to live with the
sometimes 'amateur' look of it.
In response to your other question about size, the larger the air
space between the walls of the zepp, and the mics, the better the
wind performance. Having them too close to the walls will result in
noticeable degradation of the performance.
The K-Tek stuff is supposed to be decent. I've never seen one in
person. But there really is no reason the Rycotes cost so much, so
that something is cheaper shouldn't necessarily be any indication of
it's quality. It should be possible to make something that rivals the
Rycote for well under half what it costs.
I tried the other day to go look at a Cavasion, but they were all out
at the rental shop here in Vancouver I tried to visit.
But also, you could very easily buy your own 25mm square clips from
Rycote and use them in the Cavision, they use the same band mounting
system, shouldn't be a problem. The Cavasion has 19 and 21mm clips
available, but you can get any others you need. I very likely have
some 25mm Sq clips from my Rycote kit I'm not using, and other might
too.
