Hi Jeremy,
I now use a 722 for stereo field recording and a laptop firewire
connected to a Motu Traveler for recording 4 mics at a time (my main
need is localization of sound sources by using well spaced mics).
The Motu is very nice, with a display to show the gain level in steps
of 1 dB; it has a 10-18Vdc input for easy connection with a battery.
I never compared it to the 722 for the noise, but it appears to me
very good. It allows to record up to 192 kHz with a very flat
frequency response and sharp anti-aliasing filters.
