Probably not a good idea to sink money into the older cards now. From
lists I've seen it looks like most laptop manufacturers are phasing in
the new standard at the top of their line now and it will then spread
downward.
I've a bunch of PCMCIA/CardBus cards, the MacBook Pro is the only
machine here that's the new cards so far. Still a little more expensive
for the new stuff, so I'm just getting as I need. The MacBook Pro has
needed most of my software updated (or I'm updating just to take full
advantage of the machine). My biggest problem in sound is that SparkXL
will not run so far, and it's a discontinued product so I can expect no
fixes. I'm going to have to get serious looking for a replacement.
I've been slowly building up the MacBook Pro since Christmas, still some
to do in the mac programs. I just finally put Windows on it, a bunch of
new headaches. Windows runs more or less native on the MacBook Pro, but
it is still Windows with all it's quirks. I lost a bunch of older
software on the mac side as it does not support Classic anymore.

Yes, it shows what can be done.
I'm not getting into surround yet as the playback is more a problem. I'm
working on getting the best stereo possible. With that there is not
really much need for surround. Besides, 4 MKH mikes is twice the money
and hassle of two. No way I'd go into surround and lower my mic
standards. Surround is fundamentally ambiance recording.
