The *best* systems for laptops IMHO come from the German company RME. I
use their Hammerfall Multiface system as my high-end soundcard for all
sorts of mixing and recording work. There are PCI interfaces for
desktops and Cardbus interfaces for laptops (although maybe the cardbus
interface is getting phased out), making the one card usable with all
different machines. Drivers for Linux, OSX and Windows. I have also
heard good things about their Fireface firewire soundcards (except no
Linux drivers, but that's probably not an issue for you). For a
preamp/phantom supply, their QuadMic is also completely outstanding. It
is far quieter than the preamps on my 722 for sure. But all this luxury
does come at a price!
And, since it has analog gain knobs, you can't be sure that all channels
are at the exact same level, which is what your original post inquired
about. But I think you will have a very hard time finding a laptop
multitrack soundcard with precise digital control over the preamp levels
anywhere, since most are used for recording discreet tracks of music.
Somebody speak up if I got it wrong... The pink noise suggested Marc
made might be the best option in your case, if *absolute* precision was
necessary.
best,
d.
