How about stretching a piece of the test fabric over an embroidery frame and simply placing it between a sound source and a microphone. An A-B comparison could be made in real time by moving the frame in and out of the acoustic pathway while monitoring the recording. I am sure there are much more sophisticated approaches but this one seems like a good start. At some point somebody out there might take the project into a lab for some spectrographic analysis.
