Tim, You're right, of course, that MS has a 90 degree-wide image when used with= cardioids (45 degrees off-axis on either side). But in practice I try to narrow the field a bit to eliminate that screwy-sounding phased sound 90 degrees off axis. I typically turn my NT2000 pattern setting to the 2 o'clock position (about 25% of the way between cardioid and figure-8) to deaden the mid response near 90 degrees. If I has a super cardioid or a lobar mid mic the problem would probably take care of itself. I must admit= to periodically pricing the MKH mid-side configuration using the 60 or possibly a 70, but the price continually keeps me devoted to my current setup.
