Hakon, This is a feature provided by "CoolEdit Pro" which was recently
bought by Adobe and the current version is called "Adobe Audition".
I find the 'sampled noise' approach works pretty well. There are some
controls and you can listen to the results. Very large amounts of
noise reduction definitely leave some artifacts in the result. But
it's pretty amazing for some otherwise horrible buzzy-hum recordings
I've played with.=20
I have not yet tried it on 'ambient' SoundScape type material, but
I'll bet someone here has.
Cooledit Pro in some versions is out on the web for free; Adobe
Audition with no discounts is about, um, $300. If you have a valid
Education connection it can be less.
I'll post some results, but that won't happen for a while...
