Hi Klas,
>"Sound quality" is another issue here, - whether using a preamp and line
input "sounds better" or not.
My knowledge of noise specs is not great. But I do most of the time trust m=

ears. I have used the HHB portadat and the Fostex PD-4 extensively I don't=

know their noise figures off-hand but using either Schoeps, Sennheiser or
DPA mics I would not consider using the onboard pre-amps =96 I have literal=

turned jobs down because they will not budget for a good mixer. There is a =

very obvious and startling difference between the onboard pre-amps and an
external one, in my case usually an SQN or an Audio Developments mixer.
As Walter pointed out in a recent post the quality of the A/D also makes a =

big
difference to the "Sound Quality".

preamp noise.
I recently bought the Tascam DAP1 and I would really dispute this claim. My=

reference mics are transformerless DPA 4006's and I have used them with
some of the best studio pre-amps in the world and specifically the noise fl=

studio amps than it is with the DAP1.
Once again I would urge people to consider buying a pre-amp / mixer with
onboard A/D (Sony DMX PO-1(digital throughout after the initial
preamplification) / Kamesan(Has an A/D output board)) conversion and
twinning it with one of the latest consumer digital recorders for excellent=

quality results.
All the Best,
Tom
