MS OS versions?

I am looking at upgrading Win98 2nd edition to XP professional.
Ignoring driver avail. as that is a separate issue.

Can anyone tell me if I will have an increase or a decrease in
efficient processing of sound files on an older computer???=20

This of course would be a new install not a upgrade on a new hard
drive. ms web site does not seem to specifically address this issue.

Also when I was looking at docs for writting a decent help document
directed to Cool Edit users for streamlining a computer for use with
their software when you hit those "bumps", I noted this faq in
another yahoo group.
See: http://www.24bitfaq.org/
This does give good advise for setting up a computers (specifically
laptops) for handling sound without problems. M. Nutter who wrote
this was (or may still be) a subscriber of this group but I don't
know that he ever posted here.
