Birding-aus a forum?

Birding-aus works well as an email forum - there are numerous reasons why
this is so:

* Most non-technical users can deal with email easily - other forums are
more complex
* Email can be received by many mobile phones without having to resort to
web browsing
* It is simple to reply to messages
* You are always aware of new messages, even for topics that you may not
have been interested in initially

However, for those that are interested, birding-aus is also available as a
Google group:

http://groups.google.com.au/group/birding-aus/topics

You can browse the messages, or click "Topic summary" to get a more
traditional "forum" style list. The disadvantage is that there is no way to
respond to messages using the group - in other words, it is read-only.
Technically, the difficulty is in converting forum replies to email so they
can be posted to the birding-aus mailing list.

Hi All, if someone were willing, it would easily be possible to take
advantage of the strengths of both List and Forum. To do this a moderator
would simply keep the list in its current form but sort the older and
archive material in to topics. The major difficulty that springs to mind is
that many posts would be able to be categorised in a plethora of ways.

There does seem to be a great deal of new technology and new programmes that
could be if there were a more relaxed attitude.
