Mike et al,
I think the last word on this thread should be left to Birds
Australia, their position is well set out in Stewart Rae's article
"Whirling Notions : Windfarms" in Wingspan Vol. 15 No. 1 March 2005.
This article is the most equable one I have read so far.

In an article in last friday's Australian, which I read this
morning, Senator Campbell is quoted as saying that the Government's
"Mandatory Renewable Energy Target" of 2% by 2010, including
renewable and
low emission technolgies, has been reached, at a subsidy cost of a
billion
dollars, that the number of turbines in Australia is now 600, and
that the
decision by wind-farm companies to shelve windfarms at Heemskirk in
Tasmania
and Waterloo in SA were commercial decisions.
By extrapolation, this suggests that without subsidising each
turbine by possibly a million dollars, the technology here is not
commercially viable. I'll check with the Minister as to the precise
subsidy.
Cheers
