They are Darrieus type wind turbines, and have power curves suited only to
very high wind speeds, and have low efficiency. It is not possible for them
to be silent.
It has been shown on a number of occasions that siting and deterrents can
significantly reduce bird strikes of conventional wind-turbines, but try
telling that to conservative Australia.

These windfarms are much more bird-friendly (with no rotor blades) and
are apparently silent. They are quite aesthetically pleasing too (I think).
Probably the main shortcoming is that they cannot meet the energy demands to
feed the grid, but the concept looks like a potential way forward within
this partially bird-related debate. Perhaps we will see these on the rooves
of houses to generate energy on a micro-scale?
