Dear Birding Aussers
Marc asked....."Also aren't the ferrets in New Zealand called stoats -
a wild/feral type that
> were deliberatly introduced and not the domestic type you get in Australia?"

There are lots of hunters in NZ and they through their acclimatisation
societies have introduced not only these pests but also bird species to hunt.
Examples are Red-legged Partridge, Canada Geese, Mallards and Californian
Quail. I didn't ever see them hunting redpolls, Green finches, Starlings,
Common Mynas, Chaffinches, Hedge Sparrows, House Sparrows, Yellowhammers, Cirl
Buntings, Goldfinches and the like but they introduced them any way.
Cheers
