Mikes last line sums up this issue succinctly.
How much more time and how many more biological
disasters before we put our hands up and say no more. Sometimes we humans need
protection from ourselves, trouble is in these politically correct times no one
has the guts to make the decisions. Why would we need to research the pro's and
cons of ferrets?
This issue was raised on ABC radio about 2 weeks
ago and a comment from one naturalist was simple - "can't these people find
enough cuddly furry pets from what is currently available without the need to
bring ferrets into the state".
What amazes me most from this forum is the fact
there was more criticism to the feeding of native birds (the tread a few weeks
back) than to this issue.
We have another absurd debate in this state at
present (horses in state forests) with the pro-horse lobby suggesting
birds do more damage than horses by distribution of weeds etc. And
this is a serious argument!
cheers
