Hi to all at birding-aus
You are quite right Mike (Owen)... SA has tight/extensive legislation
restricting
taking, keeping, trading, importing/exporting fauna, (even to/from other
Aust.States). In respect to birds (and reptiles) there is a limited list
of
unprotected species and an even more limited list of exempt species. In
addition
to any of these listed species, individuals may keep one animal of a
species
(note: not one of each species) listed as protected (extensive listings)
without
a permit.

Permits are of three classes enabling holders to keep and sell species
as listed. Sale are restricted to species bred and/or kept in captivity
for 6 months. A "fauna dealers licence" is also mandatory under certain
conditions. Permits are subject to
strict controls and to annual reporting of all transactions inc. births,
deaths, purchases, sales, etc. (and hopefully, are expensive to obtain
!). Penalties for breaches are substantial.

I have scanned a summary of the SA Permit/Licensing System together with
the birds/animals species schedules. It's an HTML file of about 25Kb.
Rather than attach it here, I would be happy to forward it to anyone who
would like it.
