Its sad to say that duck season in Victoria has come around again. The
opening weekend has just passed and I think the anti-shooting protesters
received some good publicity.

Members of my family again braved the shooting hooligans on the swamps to
rescue protected species and ducks that have been maimed but not killed.

Apart from the barbarous nature of the deaths of many so called game
species the following non-game species were also killed by these people:

Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) X 5 (Including 3 Cygnets, obviously illegally
shot on the water)
Blue-billed Duck (Oxyura australis) X 2 female
Great Crested Grebe (Podiceps cristatus) X 1
Australasian Grebe (Tachybaptus novaehollandiae) X 3
Grebe species X 1 headless
Dusky Moorhen (Gallinula tenebrosa) X 1
Eurasian Coot (Fulica atra) X 6

A total of 19 birds illegally shot and recovered by the duck rescuers in
the Kerang area at McDonalds Swamp and Lake Elizabeth.

Lets hope this sort of silly season ends soon.
