i got my serial port program working correctly (problem 1), now i'm going to take your advice to launch it automatically at startup.

Did you read my reply (msg # 21467) to your initial question? And also
my reply (#21473) to your second question?

If you try what I suggested, I think you'll find that your program does
exactly what you want.
