hi russel,
thanks for responding.  the answer is that i do not need to be attached to the  console.  i wish linux to boot, then run my application which serves as an ascii string command slave on com2. (my console defaults to com1)
it's a really simple application. it simply polls com2 for ascii commands, executes them when received, the responds with a response string. that's it.

Do you need to have it attached to the serial port that you are connecting to? Or is its operation completely independent of the console? For the latter, I am using daemontools. It's open source, and compiles easily.
