When it refuses to log you in it often puts an entry in /var/log/messages
or /var/log/secure.

Right, but you should be able to su or sudo to bash ... of course, that
will require that sudo is installed. In any event su should be there, but
you might have to log in on the console and add yourself to the wheel
group or something.
I don't yet have my TS-7800 because TS are out of stock :-( so I am only
guessing ...
