For schematic capture I used xcircuit:
http://xcircuit.sourceforge.net
which is a drawing program with utility far
beyond schematic capture. It is unique as
it uses postscript as its native format.
For PCB layout, "PCB":
http://pcb.sourceforge.net
Which has taken the better part of a decade
to get usable IMHO. I'm using the 20050127
version which still required a little bit of
a time investment to get familiar with the UI.
If you get over that bump it is a pretty easy
tool to use. I should caution my version is
over a year old and things likely have
improved in later versions.
The board in question has a rather simple
design and layout. For more complex cases
I'd look at gEDA:
http://www.geda.seul.org
which was still in the process of gelling
last time I checked (over a year ago), so you
may want to have a look for yourself.
Note in that design snapshot I converted all
files to PDF so folks could have something
easily examined. I'll drop the source files
somewhere if there is interest.
