Most people want a small hand-held recorder and plan on using the built-in
mics. For this, the best option is the Olympus LS-11. Significantly better
stereo sound field than the Sony M10. Lower self-noise than any other
competitor, both on paper and in the recordings. Better build than all
competitors. Extremely long battery life. Etc.
For people with less to spend, the LS-12 is a good choice. In particular the
"smart" mode is a really clever way of getting novices recording quickly. The
build is not as tight, and the noise floor is slightly higher, but not so you'd
notice. The Limerick Soundscapes group bought ten of these to facilitate our
workshops.
Zach's page inexplicably omits the LS-11, and makes too much of small
self-noise differences, when overall sound is more important.
