I'd love 10 or more seconds pre-record, which I would have thought would be
easy to buffer even on an "affordable" recorder. 1 or 2 seconds is not
enough for an unexpected wildlife sound.
In my pro recording days, I'd try to run the tape about 10 seconds before
the camera to give the film editor more leeway. I worked on several railway
stories, and with an approaching train, you need a good pre-camera run-in to
give a smooth mix in the later dubbing.
