I've done tests at 16 and 24 bits and they back the theory that the lower level bits are way below any practical noise levels. For studio work, to impress clients, you need higher rates and more bits, but for outdoor recordings with a comparatively high natural background noise, 16 bit recordiing is plenty. For higher frequencies such as bats and insects, you of course need higher sample rates, but thermal air noise at ultrasound rises with frequency, so you won't need more bits. David Brinicombe |
