Actually, flat bass response (or should I say "untempered" since it is unlikely
to be flat) tends to sound weak, partially because of the inevitable lack of
chest resonance when wearing headphones, partially because most listeners are
used to a disco EQ curve. So many companies bump up the bass. (Think of all the
Headcandy and Dr. Dre overpriced rubbish.)
It's also the reason firms have different lines of cans. One will be marketed
to hip young listeners and have an EQ curve like a smile. The other line will
be marketed to audiophiles and/or studio professionals and be (relatively)
flat. Both have their applications, for sure. A flat headphone can sound rather
unengaging.
I am not 100% sure which category the Sony MDR-7506 are in, though I have read
praise for them based on the fact they do highlight problems in signal chains.
I've hardly heard them myself, since I have this Sony aversion thing happening.
