In his Basic Photo Series, Adams went to some lengths to assert that a
two-dimensional representation of reality (with much reduced dynamic range)
is, ipso facto, an abstraction. While many think of his work as
'realistic'. He would have bristled at the accusation. He (like the others
Bernie mentions) was an artist -not a simple compressor and camera-pointer.

In audio it's the same thing. I had a meeting yesterday with a young fellow
who wants a 'realistic' recording of some songs backed by acoustic
instruments:
Q: "What do you think of compression?"
A: "Do you want to listen to it in your car?"

Re David's Stereo check
Dan: Yes, splitting and inverting one side helps immensely. I am curious
why encoding to MS yields such a dry Mid signal, though.
