Klas,

A recording of a Dodo in any quality would be a fantastic recording.

Rare species and unusual vocalizations can be very valuable
scientifically even if 'poor' quality. That makes ALL recordings
potentially good nature sound recordings.

Mono is best for sonograms (gun mics, parabolas, mics on long leads)
but you can also use one track of a stereo recording. We have talked
a lot about sonograms on this list.

Stereo is lovely for happy listening experiences and also for
documenting vanishing habitats, and for surveying species present in
(say) a dawn chorus.

Personally, I most enjoy stereo habitat recordings that make me feel
a part of nature, and listening through headphones. Very low noise
and a good stereo picture are desirable!

Other folk are into quadraphonic recording, for listening in a room
with 4 or more speakers (this has also been discussed on this list).

Many people on this list have produced commercial or non-commercial
CDs of their recordings, to share with others; some are species
compilations useful for id purposes, others are stereo habitat
recordings, all good stuff.

I have no idea what would make a good recording for television, but I
do know that the sound-effects guys have a lot of fun with Foleys :-)
