It's a Sony M10, so it's all wired to a single 3.5mm plug, and swapping cha=
nnels means rewiring it. I'll try it if I can reproduce the problem tomorro=
w.=0D
=0D
I can also try different combinations of the four capsules, in case one's f=
aulty, but if I can't reproduce the problem at home then I don't fancy doin=
g that in the field.=0D

Swap the connections between the left & right channels, don't change anythi=
ng=0D
physically with your 'SASS' and record again. Then if the 'harmonics' are s=
till=0D
in the right channel, you know it's not the 'SASS'=0D
=0D
It may be that your recorder is at fault since it is peculiar that a mic co=
uld=0D
cause such a phenomenon.=0D
=0D
What recorder are you using? If it is an FR2-LE, then you need a special ca=
ble=0D
to connect the single-ended mic signal to the balanced inputs of the Fostex=
. I=0D
do not recommend running single-ended inputs into the Fostex in any case du=
e to=0D
such 'noise' issues.=0D

I doubt the towel actually touched the capsules. The front has the rubber c=
over,=0D
and the back is deep inside a 19mm thick piece of pine.=0D
=0D
The longest bit of unshielded wiring was on the right channel (about 10" of=
it),=0D
so I scrounged some shielded cable and replaced it this evening and I'll tr=
y it=0D
again in the morning. I'll do some tests with and without towel, and with m=
e=0D
close by and a few metres away.=0D
=0D
It might be a faulty capsule, but that doesn't explain why it didn't do it =
in=0D
the indoors test, although a frequency analysis of that recording shows som=
e=0D
tiny hills at those frequencies.=0D
=0D
It's a bit disconcerting that I can't hear it, because I can't tell that it=
's=0D
happened till I get home. Even if it's all good tomorrow, I won't know if t=
hat's=0D
only because the interference source (if that's what's doing it) is off.=0D

The harmonics definitely show up using Izotope RX, just in the right=0D
channel. I can't really hear any difference between the channels. I=0D
don't know what is causing the harmonics but I should think it must=0D
be either a faulty capsule or a poor connection. Perhaps touching=0D
the capsules with the towel caused an earthing issue?=0D
