I'd suggest trying that test even though you have rewired it.  On the
table, place the recorder on the array in exactly the same position on
the array as you did in the field as best you can remember and set the
mic gains to the same level and see if you get the bands. It may well be
the mics are picking up noise from the recorder when it is running in
that close proximity...
