Hi Kent, Richard,
Talk of filtering and artifacts is largely superceded with these new tools =
in the Izotope suite.
Artifacts were a problem with denoising algorithms, and remain so with nr t=
ools (although the Izotope denoiser module is a significant improvement).
However the spectral repair module (and de-construct) in Izotope works in a=
n entirely different way, and for removal of sounds like Paul's door slams,=
and the others I mentioned previously, artifaction is not at all an issue.=
This new approach to removing unwanted sounds (essentially reducing them do=
wn to the level of the noise floor itself) bypasses any need for filtering =
and all its very audible side effects (thin sound, obvious vacancies in fre=
quency spectrum etc).
So you really can remove sounds and end up with a clean, smooth noise floor=
as if there was never anything there in the first place. That can include =
some very pervasive traffic and aircraft noise.
Whether removing those sounds is in itself artificial, and whether there re=
mains a behavioural imprint of those sounds in the vocalisations of the cri=
tters, is another issue :-)
Cheers,
Andrew
