Common things are common. With a beaver nearby, there is a good
chance that you've got a beaver munching a tree. Check out the site
for recent beaver cuttings if you can still get to the location.
True, it's much more fun to come up with an exotic explanation. I
watched with amusement a TV show postulating extra-terrestrial aliens
and what they were doing to farm animals. The show hosts and a
rancher found a cow with the eyes and rectum eaten out. "No animal
would have done this," was the conclusion. However, I've watched a
skunk munch on a dead cow carcass. I've no doubt that the postulated
"aliens" were actually a nocturnal skunk gnawing out the part of the
cow carcass most easily accessible. Visiting in the night, very
mysterious. Skunks from Mars, go figure. Hope I don't get abducted
by one.
