For minimal and decent stereo effect we experimented for about a year
and ultimately determined that a 10m (33 ft) spread between
transducers was a good start. And since sound doesn't travel in the
density of marine media as it does in air, it is probably best -- if
one is interested in capturing a sense of space -- to set up a
tetrahedral (four channel) system with three set in an equilateral
triangle at the surface and one h-phone below. That way (from the
relative arrival times at each transducer) you can pinpoint direction
of the source(s).
