Mitch,

I agree with oryoki. FR-2LE is an quirky machine, but it can give you  
world-class recordings with low-noise microphones. If you're not  
willing to go with the CF cards it takes, I'd say your best  
alternative is the MixPre > LS-11 (line in) option you're also  
considering. If it's low-noise performance you're after, I'm thinking  
those are the two best ways to go short of a Sound Devices 7XX recorder.
