The best value in this class is the Fostex FR2-LE ($600).  The FR2-LE uses 
Compactflash cards, but its preamp is superior to the recorders mentioned.  I 
think it's worth the expense of buying a few Compactflash cards.  The FR-LE has 
its idiosyncrasies, but once you learn them it's a great field recorder.
