Hi Vicki,

Sounds rather odd as SD clearly states that the date is used to set both 
creation and modification dates.   1/1/1904 is a default used when OSX doesn't 
find a creation date associated with the file.  Can you check the files on the 
original media and see if there is a creation date displayed?
