2 important categories for me are level control and level indicator.
These have to be very easy and fast to see and control or else the
bird has flown. For example, one category could be "level control",
and the data could be " thumb wheel, side", or" slider, front face",
or "digital, menu driven". And the other category might be level
indicator, with data such as "LCD, 24 bar", or "5-light", and might
indicate the dB levels for max and min readings. For me, weak or
obscure level indicators can be very frustrating under many lighting
conditions.

Oh one other thing might be how good the pause feature is. Perhaps
this is less relevant with some machines, but its nice to have level
control and indicator going without wasting tape/battery/megabytes.
If there is a real difference in quality of this feature it would be
a consideration for me.

Also, in the interest of completeness, perhaps some very cheap tape
recorders could be included if they are still sold, such as the Radio
Shack CTR-69 Recorder. My CTR-69 machine cost about $100 and has
worked well for fifteen years, the main problems being bulk and
weight to lug into the field, and time to digitize the tapes. It
still might have a nice niche with strong eager youths short on money.

As I am most definitely no "expert" please excuse if any of this
makes no sense.
