Wen Bernie bought up this question I decided to do a real-time
experiment..
If anyone wants a copy of a file I recorded please contact me off line.

I used the 788t 8 track recorder and in channels 1&2 I plugged in the
MKH-40/30:
In channels 3&4 I plugged in the MKH-20/30:
Both sets of microphones pointed the same direction and both sets of
microphones were set at the exact same gain. Both sets of MS
recordings were linked on the 788t.
The balances were centered, the hight of the microphones were exact.
The only difference was channels 1&2 were in a sennheiser windjammer
and the channels 3&4 were in a windpac.
What is most noticeable is channels 3&4 (MKH-20/30) are louder because
of the saturation from the omni microphone (MKH-20) In my opinion the
MKH-20 overloads the side, it's certainly worth listening to, to get a
perspective on mic options... the 40/30 option is always the best in
my opinion, the only way to compensate for the omni microphone is
reduce the mid and increase the sides but you get no depth at all this
way...
Still a nice recording but i'll have the 30/40 combination anytime for
nature recording...
