<<are there any small mics (perhaps condenser lavalier) which have low self noise?>> "Low noise" is a relative term, but basically the answer is no. It's an inescapable fact of physics that as diaphragm size decreases noise increases. The best performing miniature microphones from DPA, Sennheiser, etc, where cost is no object, are as much as 12 to 15 db noisier than their quietest large diaphragm models. Until some heretofore unknown technology replaces capacitor microphone designs, this is a reality we're stuck with. Scott Fraser |
