Big hint here - try putting the low filter on in your SD recorder. Perhaps some extreme low frequesncise are getting in and all you hear is the modulation artifacts resulting from the LF noise. I always keep a low cut on unless I specifically seek low frequency recordings, lke trains or waterfalls. at minimum.
