No matter the brand the lighting stands all seem to look the same. Mine
don't have any brand name on them, came off ebay many years ago.

Yes, probably several hundreds of yards to a quarter mile away, a pack
calling on the run. The recording is in a wildlife refuge I frequent.
But there is a pack that comes through my place too, sometimes calling
within a hundred yards of the house. Always short sessions, however, and
in the middle of the night. I'm sure the subdividers will fix that.

I just started from a plain piece of aluminum hex stock, less than a
dollar and maybe a half hour on the lathe. Then the lock screw machined
up from a bit of DelrinAF. It's some 120miles round trip to the nearest
decent photo shop from here.

For backpacking, yes, he'd need lighter and smaller. Though I have a old
stand here that goes higher and is short enough when compacted. I am not
sure about putting the SASS on it as it's pretty lightly built.
