While there's much to recommend a fancy carbon fiber tripod, I find
myself more interested in a tripod I found on sale at Sears two weeks
ago. Price online is about $9, but in the store it cost only $3!

The package includes a 60 inch tripod with a head that tilts so you
can capture photos in portrait or landscape mode, a quick-release
plate for fast mounting of your camera, and a nice canvas bag to carry
the tripod.

The $3 tripod is made from aluminum, and it's not particularly strong.
So it's not the best choice for mounting a heavy camera or parabolic
mic. But it's fine for supporting the typical pocket-size camera, mic
or small audio recorder.

Look for the tripod in the Sears tools department. I found this item
near the laser levels and laser measuring tools. The Sears web page
about it is here http://tinyurl.com/4yd5x9
