My post is in that thread that talks about my Gitzo, whicho I really
like. Though it does not mount to a camera, it's legs extend further
than a traditional tripod allowing more stability on uneven terrain
with a large mic array on it. There are others that do this as well.
I have backpacked with it, it's lightweight and robust.
I think it's generally agreed that stability isn't quite as important
for audio as it is for camera work. A cheap lightweight aluminum
tripod will get you far depending on what you are supporting. An
aluminum tripod may not stand up as well under the forces in a
typically outfitted (read: full) backcountry backback
