Dan,
True the .1 is a bit silly, i actually prefer to mix without my sub. I
only really use my sub for A/B-ing the audio as i am assuming that
most people will let their Bass management run their system. That
said, I may only record the .1 for bass reinforcement if needed during
mixdown.
I have actually just acquired the H3D and I have yet to experiment in
the field with it. I believe that the H3D has a discrete LFE mic but I
am awaiting confirmation from Holophone (though I highly doubt that it
will have the superb MKH-110 capabilities!).
The main reason for my purchase was a nice little packaged mic unit
without an unwieldy mic array to lug around. Also, I have an option to
record 3-6 inputs in one unit. Most of my recordings are of music,
interior and exterior environnments, as well as ambient recordings of
space for my experimental surround compositions.
Thanks for the input and the tip for Tom Holman's handbook I will
check it out!
