Hi Terence, I personally use a Gitzo 1228 mkII (no spreaders). I agree with some other posters that you don't need to spend a lot of money on this element. One of the features I find very useful in the field is legs can extend beyond the normal 30 degrees or so to about 180 degrees, this allows me to provide a very stable base for my mics.
