It might be worth differentiating between tripods for motion picture and vi=
deo work and tripods for field still photography. I agree that spreaders ar=
e a lousy idea on uneven terrain, which may be one reason why tripods used =
for field still photography don't normally have spreaders.=0D

I do think that still photography tripods work really well for audio record=
ing. There are brands that are less expensive than Gitzo and Monfrotto. Als=
o, if one wants to really limit weight and/or cost, there are solutions. Fo=
r example, one can take along a bag, weight it with rocks and run a bungee =
cord from the head plate of the tripod to the bag.=0D
